I would agree with X but instead of levels try Threshold. It's under Image > Adjustments menu.
Just push the white arrow to the left until you get the effect you want.

I don't know how I missed those tuts I've gone through everyone I think. I do kinda like the threshold method if you want only a few stars or many stars, it gives you some control.
